There is a lot more to this pre than I expected from the price. I work in a studio, and bought the Art Tube Channel for my home studio I do on the side. For its low sale price, this thing kills.One thing to be aware of from the get-go is that the "hand selected" tubes are HORRID. Although it voids the warranty, I highly recommend you swap them for electro-harmonix 12AX7EH or an NOS brand of your choice. NOTE: it only uses 1 in the pre-amp section, so if you replace only that one your tone with improve greatly.
Also note – keep the stock compression tube. you need to put audio through that module for approx. 24 hours to break in a new tube (make it squishy). I played the Killers album on repeat :D Besides the crappy tubes, the ART has two major Cons:
The circuitry is "eh", not bad, but it doesn't bring the best out of the tubes and it's a tid noisy. It also doesn't have A/D converter, so worse on noise.
And there is NO tube in the EQ section! The third tube comes directly after the EQ section to make up for any loss of gain during EQ.
But, the EQ settings are wide and overlapping, thus very musical All in all, fantastic buy. KEEP THE MANUAL it is the perfect guide to getting great sounds out of the unit. Definitely a benefit having the compression in the unit, and the manual makes it easy. If you feel you don't need comp or EQ, the EH 12AY7 preamp has much better tone in the same price range. DON'T use this (or other tube pre) live (they feedback horribly) and don't forget to use a De-Esser plugin if you use compression.
I also recommend using it's 1/4'' out unless you are making long runs.
